Dance of Assam

Located in the Northeastern part of India, Assam is a large and beautiful state. For its wonderful geographical,location and abundance of natural assets, Assam offers breathtaking scenic beauty to people and that is why it is one of the most popular tourist destination in this part of the country. Wonderful view of mountains, rivers, cruises on river Brahmaputra, trip to the hill station of Haflong, the breathtaking view of Chherapunji, the wilderness areas in Kajeeranga are major tourist attractions in Assam and are visited by thousands of national and international tourists throughout the year.
Guwahati, the capital and the largest city of the state is also very popular as tourist destination and apart from scenic beauty and several Hindu temples, scope for shopping is also a major tourist attraction in Guwahati. But apart from all these, cultural and recreational activities are also interesting things to see in Nepal. Specially dance of Assam is a very important part of its profile.

Like all other places in the country, dance of Assam is an integral part of the social and cultural tradition of the people of the state. Besides, dance of Assam is also a major source of amusement and entertainment for the local people and also a very important recreational activity. Dance of Assam is also an important part of various rituals and festivals that take place throughout the years.

Assam has always maintained a rich tradition of dance and it is very diverse in nature. Traditional and classical dance of Assam varies from one region to another and from one community to another. However, Bihu is the most popular form of folk dance of Assam. Bihu dance is generally performed by young girls and boys and its specialties are brisk stepping, swaying of hips and flipping and flinging and flipping of hands.
Speaking about dances it must be mentioned here that Satriya or Satriya Nritya is the classical dance of Assam. Several programs on Satriya dance are held in Guwahati in the winter months. Several dance academies in the states like Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, Sangeet Satra, Satra Mahasabha and Puspanjall Cultural Academy organize the Satriya dance programs in different parts of Guwahatai in winter so if you are there at any time between November and February then don't miss this beautiful and colorful program of dance.

Apart from these, Bhortal Nritya performed around Guwahati and Barpeta region, Jhumur Nach performed by tea tribes, Bagurumba of Bodo community and Ali Ai Lang of Mishing community in the Northeastern part are also important forms of dance of Assam.
