Drama and Theatre of Assam

Before the invention of radio and introduction of cinema halls and television, traditional music, dance, drama and theatre were the only sources of amusement and entertainment for the people of particular region. In early days, drama and theatre were most popular recreational activities performed by the people of a particular region and were also integral part of cultural and social life of people. Located in South Asia, India is one such country where people still maintain a rich tradition of drama and theatre. Located in the Northeastern part of the country, Assam is a state where drama and theatre are still considered as major sources of entertainment. Drama and theatre of Assam is still a very important part of its culture.
The concept of drama and theatre of Assam has changed a lot over the years and now several modern dramas are performed on stages. Several academies and training institutions have come up for preparing interested people for performing in drama and theatre of Assam. Several dramas and short plays based on social conditions are now enacted on stages but in early days, drama and theatre of Assam was mainly based on mythological themes and legends and thus it was an important part of religious festivals too. Apart from providing entertainment and amusement, drama and theatre of Assam provides people a scope to know about the Assamese literature and languages too.
Speaking about drama and theatre of Assam one must not forget to mention about the mythological plays known as 'Bhaona' which were popularized by Sankardeva. People used to act on the stage wearing colorful dresses and became the center of attraction for common people. Slowly the popularity increased and people started to form theatre groups. Kohinoor, Nataraj, Abahan and Aradhana were some of the most popular names in the field of drama and theatre of Assam at one time and these cultural academies are still working on improving the standard of the dramas and theatres.
