Handicrafts of Assam

Assam is one of the states of India. Guwahati is the capital of this beautiful hill state. It is situated in the extreme north-eastern part of the country. This hilly land is a place of of rich cultural heritage, and breath taking natural beauty. Assam is a place of not one culture but different cultures. Each has its own unique charm. Weaving- In the villages, almost every home possesses a loom. Weaving is an art that is handed down from one generation to another. Paat(Silk), Muga, Endi, Cotton are generally used for weaving.
The Mekhala, a traditional dress of Assam, is famous. It is a great favorite with tourists. The Laichangphi quilts are also very popular. Weavers use flora and fauna as common motifs, in their exquisite designs. Towels known as Riha and Gamosa are favorite buys, too. The Sualkuchi district is also known as the Manchester of Assam. It has a flourishing silk producing industry. Kuhila fabric, of Dhubri district, is also very famous.

Jewelry- The Sonowal Kachari tribe of Assam make delicate gold jewelry. Assamese jewelry like the gal-pata necklaces, the gaam-kharu bracelets, the keru earrings, and the doong-doongi lockets attract a a lot of buyers.

Cane And Bamboo Articles- The region abounds in tall grasses like cane and bamboo. Furniture and baskets made of cane and bamboo are in great demand. The japi (hat) made from strips of bamboo, and sitalpati mats made from mohtra (patidai) reeds, are very famous with tourists.

Brass And Bell Metal Articles- Kamrup, in Assam, is famous for its water pots and bowls. These articles are famous for their beauty and strength, the shining golden finish of these articles is very attractive.

Pottery- Assam is also famous for its exquisite pottery. These range from simple household items to dolls, and images of gods and goddesses.
Wooden Articles- Wood carvings found in the temples, monasteries, royal buildings show the delicate craftsmanship of the Assamese wood carvers. Tourists flock to the palace of the Ahoms (the dynasty that ruled Assam), and the Vaishnavite monasteries that abound in the sate, to see the wood carvings.

Pith Or Indian Cork (Shola)- Toys, images, and decorative articles made from pith are exquisitely beautiful, and have been a part of the popular handicrafts of Assam, as well as West Bengal.
