Culinary Culture of Bihar

Bihar is a state in India. It is located at the central eastern part of the country. Bihar has a rich cultural heritage. It is a historic state and thus has many interesting places. The place attracts tourists from all over the world. The culture of the state is reflected in the cuisines of Bihar. The culinary culture of Bihar projects the caste distinction that was prevalent in the state. Rice has been the staple food in Bihar since the days of Buddha. The rich and well do families used to consume good quality rice while the people who belong to the lowest rung of the society used to consume inferior quality of rice. The upper and middle classes of the Hindu community are vegetarian in food habits. However, the lower classes of the Hindu community are non vegetarians.
The Muslims also eat meat. Delicious Bihari cuisines include Biryani, Kebab etc. Some sects of Brahmins like the Mithila Brahmanis eat fish and that is accepted in Bihar. Wheat, lentils, vegetables and pickle are the foods in Bihar.

Khichdi, a preparation combining rice and lentils, seasoned with spices, is one of the prominent food items in Bihar. Sattu (flour of fried grams) is another popular food in Bihar. Chiwra (beaten rice), Litti (a type of fast food), Dhuska (fried food item), halwa (prepared by frying semolina), Makhana (a kind of water fruit) are some other important snacks consumed by the people of Bihar.

The culinary culture of Bihar traces its source to the Jataks where one finds the mention of several sweet delicacies like pittha, kaja, pua and palala.
The Chotanagpur area of Bihar is the home of numerous tribal groups. The important food of these tribal groups are rice, wheat, millets, vegetables etc. Handia is a popular tribal drink.
