Fairs and Festivals of Bihar

Bihar is located in India. The state is historically famous. Mauryan Empire and Nanda dynasty ruled this place. Patna is capital of the state. It was earlier known as Pataliputra. Two famous universities namely Nalanda and Vikramshila were situated here. Some of the tourist attractions of Bihar are Patna, Vaishali, Parasnath, Pawapuri, Bodh Gaya etc. The Fairs and Festivals of Bihar are steeped in history.

Some popular fairs and festivals of Bihar are :
Sonepur Cattle Fair : The fair is considered as the largest cattle fair in the Asian continent. Sonepur catlle fair continues for one whole month. The fair is a cattle trading center.
Makar Sankranti Mela : The fair in Bihar is observed on 14th of January every year. It marks the beginning of summer season. The poor are given offering during the festival.

Chatth Puja : Chatth Puja is one of the important festivals of Bihar. It starts afetr Diwali. The people of Bihar worship the sun during the festival. It continues for four days and is celebrated twice a year. Fasting is done during the celebration. It is more of a sacrifice than celebration.

Ram Navami : The festival is celebrated on the auspicious day when Lord Rama was born. It is performed to pay homage to Lord Rama.

Madhushravani : It is celebrated in the month of August. It emphasizes the need to blend religion and tradition in day to day life.

Sarhul Festival : Sarhul is the most important tribal festival celebrated in Chotanagpur. It is celebrated during the months of February or March.
Pitrapaksha Mela : The fair is held in Gaya. It is held to offer respect to the dead ancestors Sama Chakeva Bihula

Other popular fairs and festivals of Bihar are Holi, Durga Puja, Diwali, Rakhi Purnima,Shivratri, Nag Panchami, Basant Panchami, Budda Jayanti, Mahabir Jayanti, Christmas etc.
