Music of Bihar

Bihar in India is a historic state. The state offers unexplored areas of natural beauty. The place attracts tourist from all over the world. Music of Bihar :

Vidyapati Songs : Mithilanchal region of Bihar if well known for the songs of Vidyapati. Vidyapati was a reputed poet of Maithili. Love is the central theme of Vidyapati's songs. The songs are dedicated to Lord Krishna and his consort Radha.

Sohar Khilouna : The birth of a child is celebrated in Bihar by performing music. The women folk of Bihar sings Sohar on the birth ceremony of a child. The child is even compared to several Hindu deities like Lord Krishna or Lord Rama. The diction of Sohar is unique and distinctive.

Phagua Songs : These songs are performed during the Holi festival.

Biraha Songs : Biraha songs are sad songs which became popular when many inhabitants of Bihar had to migrate to Fiji, Mauritus and West Indian islands as laborers during the British rule.

The bhojpuri folksongs are popular music of Bihar. It is specially noted for its musical rhythm and beat.

The music of Bihar is mainly performed in groups. The songs are sung in family gatherings and occasions like birth ceremonies, festivals and weddings.
