Hindi in Devnagari script is the official language of Indian central Government. Hindi is accorded this status as per Article 343 of Indian Constitution. 22 languages are recognized by the constitution of India including Urdu, Telegu, Tamil, Sindhi, Snathali, Snakrit, Punjabi, Oriya, Nepali, Marathi, Meitei, Malayalam, Maithili, Konkani, Kashmiri, Kannada, Hindi, Gujrati, Dogri, Bodo, Bengali and Assamese.
The literature of India is a vast domain and has flourished in several languages since time immemorial. The oral literature in India is rich in India. The Vedas are the finest example of oral literature in India. The popular epics, which still evoke wonder, are “Ramayana” and the “Mahabharata.” “Arthashastra” is the book on politics and “Vastu Shastra” is treatise written on town planning and architecture. Kalidasa, was the famous poet of Sanskrit. One of his most beautiful works is “The Recognition of Shakultala”. Tulisdas is another famous poet of Bhakti period. He wrote “Ramcharitmanas”, an epic poem in Hindi based on the epic “Ramayana.”
