Painting in India

Painting is perhaps the most primitive expression of culture. Human have always wanted to express their joys, ecstasies or sorrows through paintings. Painting in India has a long history. India is a rich in culture and tradition. Painting is one of the most potent forms of expression.

Paintings in India have found mention in the literature of India. Scroll of paintings depicting whole legend are there. “Vishnudharmottara”, another book in its section “ Chitrasutra” described the tenets of the art of painting. This book describes painting with six limbs, namely, various forms, proportion, adding emotions, creating luster, like portrayal and mixing colors to produce a different effect.
Pre-historic paintings are found in Madhya Pradesh in the caves of Bhimbetka. Musical instruments like harp are featured in these paintings, which shows the appearance of music and sound in civilization. Mesolithic paintings are geometric forms like rhomboid, circle, square and spiral.

The Harappan paintings speak of the prosperous Indus Valley Civilization. Firstly, the figures were half-animal and half-human. The Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves are the examples of exquisite paintings of early chistian era.

The Gupta rulers patronized art and painting greatly. The Pallavas and Cholas left behind majestic remnants of ppaintings. Indian painting today is a diverse field, absorbing both indigenous influences and international influences like cubism, surrealism, magic realism and others.
The mural paintings are carved on solid bases and miniature paintings are on papers or cloth.

Some of the traditional forms of paintings in India are Bengali painting, Tanjore painting, Mysore painting, Mughal painting, rajput painting, Madhubani painting and Miniature painting. Some of the famous Indian painters are B.G. Sharma, Tyeb Mehta, Sunil Das, Jainul Abedin, Jamini Roy, MF Hussain, Geta Vadhera, Bikash Bhattacharya, Ramkinker Baij, Hemen Majumdar and other painters.
