Drama and Theatre of Goa

Goa, the smallest state of the country, has been noted world wide for its Portuguese architectures, churches, beaches and rich culture of Goa. The culture of this spectacular state of India is the amalgamation of its age old sculptures, paintings, music and dance, architectures, drama and theatre, handicrafts, culinary and fairs and festivals. The drama and theatre of Goa has earned immense recognition and won hearts of people throughout the country as well as overseas. The Government of Goa has also been contributing a substantial effort in promoting the drama and theatre of the state among the local residents and tourists.
The folk drama of Goa can be mainly segregated into two forms, Tiatr and Jagar. These famous styles of dramatic styles exclusively portray and narrate the stories of Indian epics namely Mahabharata and Ramayana. Besides these, the dramas also showcased the major issues of the society and depicted the causes and effects of the social norms in front of the people. These folk dramas of Goa and others like Dashavatari, Ranmale, Goulankala, Rathkala and so forth are all complemented with songs and music. The Jagar folk drama of Goa, the oldest among the entire lot, is performed by two communities, namely Gawda Jagar and Perani Jagar.
Tiatr is basically 6/7 acts, each being referred to as Podd’dde, collated together with solo, songs, duet and so forth placed at regular intervals. There is a wide array of Tiatr folk drama in Goa, each of them dealing with different types of themes of the society or community. The theatre of Goa goes hand-in-hand with the dramatic performances. There are a number of professional theatres in Goa which are noted for their performances and plays.
