Dance of Himachal Pradesh

The folk tradition of Himachal Pradesh is known for its colorful dances and musical extravaganza. In Lahaul and spiti Shunto is a popular dance. This Dance of Himachal Pradesh is dedicated to Lord Buddha. Gafila is a dance of the couples. The dodra dance is also one of the most prominent Dance of Himachal Pradesh. The dance of dodra kawar is meant to be danced after a successful agricultural harvest. The singhi or the snow lion dance is atypical dance of the Buddhists. This dance is performed as an attempt to ensure peace and prosperity in the hills. Kharait, Ujagjama and Chadhgebrikar are some of the other popular Dance of Himachal Pradesh. Continuous dance forms have always influenced the dance forms in Himachal Pradesh.
Dhiuli Pheti and Bashari are some of the major dance forms prominent in the village fairs of Himachal Pradesh. The Naati dance prominent in the Kullu region can be performed in 13 different styles. In this dance the women link their hands and dance in groups as they rhythmically tap their feet to the beats of the drums and music. Rasa, Srimaur and pindi bandhas are also some of the major group dance forms of Himachal Pradesh. All these dance forms form an integral part of Dance of Himachal Pradesh.
During the season of Lohri, Gee dance is performed with great pomp and show. The legendary love songs of Konju and Chanchalo are often accompanied by dancing. As groups of singers sing these songs with popular mountain instruments women gather in groups to perform the dance forms. All these dance forms carry a meaning of their own. Losar Shona Chuksam dance and Dangi are some of the other popular Dance of Himachal Pradesh. Some of these dance form are often performed soon after a harvest while others are performed to celebrate the festivals in the mountains.
