Fairs and Festivals of Himachal Pradesh are an integral part of the simple life of the residents of Himachal Pradesh. Most of the fairs in Himachal Pradesh have an interesting tale associated with them. Besides legends many of the Fairs and Festivals of Himachal Pradesh are rich with local flavors, dance and music. The beginning of the calendar year sees the celebration of Halda in Lahaul. This Buddhist festival is celebrated on the banks of Chandra Bhaga river. Lohri and Maghi are also celebrated in the winter months. These festivals celebrate a good harvesting season with new crops stored in the granary by the farmers. People dress up in colorful attires during this time of the year and celebrate the year in glee.
The tribal population of Spiti celebrate Dechhang in the height of Winter. Guru Gobind Ssingh's birthday is also celebrated with a festive mood in Himachal Pradesh. Soon after the snow fall just by the end of December people celebrate the very first snowfall by collecting them in conical basket bags.
