Painting of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is a state in India with a population of more than 300 km sq area. Its capital city is Bhopal and the largest city is Indore. Most of its population consists of tribes and are very backward in terms of developments. Hence most painting of Madhya Pradesh is done in tribal style and is largely uninfluenced by other cultures. Many cities in Madhya Pradesh attract tourists with its historic monuments and paintings with many of its sites being declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The painting of Madhya Pradesh can be witnessed by the drawing in the tribal population which is primitive and starts since the time when the tribes did not know how to build houses and stayed in caves.
The walls of ancient caves still have drawings on its walls and rock shelters. The adivasis or tribals depicted scenes of hunting and symbols to ward off evil spirit, bad luck and diseases.

The Buddhist rock-carved monasteries of the middle of the first millennium AD, such as Bagh in Madhya Pradesh still survives today. The Rathwa Bhils of Madhya Pradesh and eastern Gujarat has paintings on the walls as rituals within their homes. These are paintings to please the deities and spirits. Other paintings which reflect are and daily life are all done outside the sacred enclosure. The painting in Madhya Pradesh by the Bhils and Bhilala tribes of Madhya Pradesh mostly depicts mythical scenes and the style is now known as the pithora paintings. It is done with bright multi colored hues showing Horses, elephants, tigers, birds, gods, men and objects of daily life.
Another form of painting in Madhya Pradesh which is popularly used is the mandana. Beautiful patterns and diagrams are made on the floor with rice paste, colored powder, flower petals and grains of rice. These symbolic motifs with complex floral and geometric patterns are meant to attract cosmic powers for the well being of the house. The Mughal miniature paintings are also very famous in Madhya Pradesh.
