The walls of ancient caves still have drawings on its walls and rock shelters. The adivasis or tribals depicted scenes of hunting and symbols to ward off evil spirit, bad luck and diseases.
The Buddhist rock-carved monasteries of the middle of the first millennium AD, such as Bagh in Madhya Pradesh still survives today. The Rathwa Bhils of Madhya Pradesh and eastern Gujarat has paintings on the walls as rituals within their homes. These are paintings to please the deities and spirits. Other paintings which reflect are and daily life are all done outside the sacred enclosure. The painting in Madhya Pradesh by the Bhils and Bhilala tribes of Madhya Pradesh mostly depicts mythical scenes and the style is now known as the pithora paintings. It is done with bright multi colored hues showing Horses, elephants, tigers, birds, gods, men and objects of daily life.
