Dance of Orissa

Songs and dances of a particular region are integral parts of its art and culture. Songs and dances performed by people of a particular region speaks about different cultural traditions and social rituals. Orissa is a state located in the eastern part of India. Located along the coast of bay of Bengal, Orissa shares its borders with other Indian states like West Bengal, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Orissa is a large state and one of the oldest regions in the country. For its breathtaking scenic beauty and numerous historical monuments, Orissa is very popular as a tourist destination too. Built in the ancient age, the historical monuments scattered all over Orissa, specially in Bhubaneshwar, the capital city and around Puri, the most popular tourist spot, are also great specimens of art, craft, sculpture and architecture practiced by the people of the region at that period. But apart from these, different forms of dance of Orissa are also one of its major tourist attractions.

Orissi is the classical and traditional dance and the most popular form of dance of Orissa. Oridssi dance is also an important cultural activity performed by the people of the state. As it is the traditional dance of Orissa, Odisssi dance is always performed in the temples and in front of Lord Jagannath. Wearing ornaments made of flowers is a specialty of Orissi dance. However apart from Orissi, there are various other forms of dance of Orissa which include various tribal dances and puppet dances.
Danda Nata is one of the most popular tribal dances of Orissa and is mainly performed in regions like Sambalpur, Boudh-Phulgani, Bolangir, Gadajata and areas of Dhenkanal, Puri and Ganjam. Danda Nata is actually a tribal way of celebrating the New Year that begins in the month April. Apart from that, Chaiti Ghoda, Dasakathia, Dalkhai, Changu and Dhanu Jatra are also very popular form of dance of Orissa.
