Fairs and Festivals of Orissa

Orissa, the state located in the eastern part of India and along the coast of Bay of Bengal is a very popular tourist destination. Large number of people from all parts of the country and even from outside the country come to travel in Orissa because there are are a lot of places to visit and lot of things to do here. Located close to Bhubaneshwar, the state capital, Puri is the most popular tourist spot in Orissa. The breathtaking view of the Bay of Bengal and the long golden and beach of Puri are attracting millions of tourist for ages. Besides, the Jagannath Temple and the Sun temple of Konark which is located nearby are also major tourist attractions of Orissa.
The sun temple of Konarak is one of the greatest specimens of ancient art, craft and and sculpture of India. The Rajarani Temple in Bhubaneshwar, cave paintings in Udaygiri and Khandagiri are also interesting places to visit in Orissa. But apart from all these, the fairs and festivals of Orissa are also some its major tourist attractions.

Fairs and festivals of Orissa are held throughout the year and are participated by lot of people. The fairs ans festivals of Orissa are very important parts of the social and cultural life of the people of the state. As it is the home to Lord Jagannath, Rathyatra is the biggest festival of Orissa. Huge procession comes out carrying the 'rath' (chariot) of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. The main purpose of Rathyatra is to carry Lord Jagannath and his brother and sister to their birthplace Gundicha Mandir. The procession starts from Jagannath Temple and are pulled by thousands of devotees along the roads of Puri.

Durga Puja, which is dedicated to Goddess Durga and held in the month of October is also an important part of fairs and festivals of Orissa. Though Durga Puja is the biggest festival of West Bengal, one of its neighboring states, people of Orissa celebrate it with joy for six long days. Maha Shivratri is another big festival held in Orissa every year. According to Hindu calender, Maha Shivratri is held on the 14th day of the month of Phalgun. Devotees keep fast for the entire day and offer Bael leaves to Lord Shiva
Held in the month of December every year, Konark Dance Festival is not only a very popular festival of Orissa but also an important cultural and recreational activity performed by the people of the state. Konark dance Festival is held at the Sun Temple in Konarak and renowned dancers participated in the show. Apart from Orissi, the classical and traditional dance of Orissa, Bharatnatyam and Kthaka are also performed in this festival.Puri Beach festival, which is held every November is also a very important part of fairs and festivals of Orissa and includes several cultural shows that are organized by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Orissa.

Apart from these, Taratarini Mela which is held in Mid-April, Makarmela which is held on 14th January and is dedicated to Sun God and the Megha mela of Konarak are also important parts of fairs and festivals of Orissa.
