West Bengal, lying on the Gangetic Plain is a land where diverse cultures combine and give birth to a rich kaleidoscope. From time immemorial, Bengal’s ever growing affluence and the culmination of different cultures has gifted a unique culture to Bengal, which has enlivened every epoch of the society of Bengal.

Since, the “Charyapada”, the first specimen of Bengali literature, the writing in West Bengal enriched with the contribution by the Vaisnava poets. Rabindranath Tagore, the icon of the renaissance of Bengali literature gave birth to a new era in Bengali literature. Today Bengali literature is diverse and rich with several contemporary writers.

Music has a long history in Bengal. The music forms emanating from the soil of Bengal are Rabindra Sangeet, songs composed by Rabindranath Tagore. Nazrul Geeti are songs composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam, the great poet of Bengal. Shyamasangeet are devotional songs. Jibonmukhi are songs depicting real life. The recent entry to the music of Bengal is the songs of Bangla bands, which rocks the young hearts with witty lyric and innovative tunes. Some of the famous Bangla bands are Chandrabindu, Bhumi, Cactus and Sahar. The folk music of Bengal is rich. Baul songs are popular folk songs of Bengal.
The dance forms of Bengal are innovative and influenced by different forms of dramas. Rabindra Nritya, Gouriyo Nrityo and Adhunik Nritya are the three dance forms of Bengal.

The cultural events are the live components of the culture of West Bengal. Durga Puja, Basanta Utsav and Paila Baishak are the three grand cultural events celebrated in West Bengal.
